以色列人民強烈要求 神選派一個國王給他們, 神雖然不喜歡, 但這是人民的心聲,
遂要以色列人民群據一地, 集中力量以抵禦外來族群的攻擊和侵略; 並指示先知撒母耳(Samuel), 揀選掃羅為王(King
Saul).
撒母耳上記(1
Samuel) 10:18-19
18 對他們說、耶和華以色列的 神如此說、我領你們以色列人出埃及、救你們脫離埃及人的手、又救你們脫離欺壓你們各國之人的手。
and
said to them, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'I brought Israel up out of Egypt ,
and I delivered you from the power of Egypt and all the kingdoms that
oppressed you.'
19 你們今日卻厭棄了救你們脫離一切災難的 神、說、求你立一個王治理我們、現在你們應當按著支派宗族、都站在耶和華面前。
But
you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of all your calamities and
distresses. And you have said, 'No, set a king over us.' So now present
yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and clans."
掃羅王帶領軍隊, 抵抗從四面八方而來的侵入, 心力交瘁的他, 把一頭牛支解成一吋吋大小, 展示給將士們看,
如果不團結, 下場如此牛將慘不忍睹, 以此激勵四方將士, 團結一心, 終於打敗侵入的敵人, 並擄獲甚多戰利品與投降的士官兵.
撒母耳上記(1
Samuel) 11:7
7 他將一對牛切成塊子、託付使者傳送以色列的全境、說、凡不出來跟隨掃羅和撒母耳的、也必這樣切開他的牛．於是耶和華使百姓懼怕、他們就都出來如同一人。
He took a pair of
oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent the pieces by messengers throughout Israel ,
proclaiming, "This is what will be done to the oxen of anyone who does not
follow Saul and Samuel." Then the terror of the LORD fell on the people,
and they turned out as one man.
其中非利士人(Philistines)事奉巴力(Baalim)和亞斯她錄(Ashtaroth)神, 雖掃羅王要求他們改信 耶和華, 因他們曾幫忙退敵, 所以也不是很嚴厲要求; 另一次受到亞瑪力人(Amalekites)侵襲, 先知撒母耳(Samuel)依 主指示掃羅王(King Saul), 要把他們全部殺掉,
但掃羅王接受亞瑪力王所獻上的牛羊, 並未遵照 神的旨意, 因此而觸怒的 神.
撒母耳上記(1
Samuel) 15:21-24
21 百姓卻在所當滅的物中、取了最好的牛羊、要在吉甲獻與耶和華你的 神。
The soldiers took
sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in
order to sacrifice them to the LORD your God at Gilgal."

22 撒母耳說、耶和華喜悅燔祭和平安祭、豈如喜悅人聽從他的話呢．聽命勝於獻祭、順從勝於公羊的脂油。
But Samuel
replied: "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much
as in obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to
heed is better than the fat of rams.
(聽從 神, 敬畏 神的, 當倍受祝福; 不聽 神話語的, 也不配為王)
23 悖逆的罪、與行邪術的罪相等．頑梗的罪、與拜虛神和偶像的罪相同．你既厭棄耶和華的命令、耶和華也厭棄你作王。
For rebellion is
like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because
you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you as king."
24 掃羅對撒母耳說、我有罪了、我因懼怕百姓聽從他們的話、就違背了耶和華的命令、和你的言語。
Then Saul said to
Samuel, "I have sinned. I violated the LORD'S command and your
instructions. I was afraid of the people and so I gave in to them.
以色列才開始立王, 這一位掃羅王, 竟然就一而再的不接受 神的指示, 此舉觸怒了 神, 於是
神要先知撒母耳(Samuel)前往伯利恆, 尋找耶西 (Jesse)的兒子大衛, 並要立他為王以取代掃羅.
撒母耳上記(1
Samuel) 16:7; 16:10-12
7 耶和華卻對撒母耳說、不要看他的外貌和他身材高大、我不揀選他、因為耶和華不像人看人、人是看外貌、耶和華是看內心。
But the LORD said
to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have
rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at
the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."
10 耶西叫他七個兒子都從撒母耳面前經過、撒母耳說、這都不是耶和華所揀選的。
Jesse had seven of
his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, "The LORD has not
chosen these."
11 撒母耳對耶西說、你的兒子都在這裡麼．他回答說、還有個小的、現在放羊．撒母耳對耶西說、你打發人去叫他來、他若不來、我們必不坐席。
So he asked Jesse,
"Are these all the sons you have?" "There is still the
youngest," Jesse answered, "but he is tending the sheep." Samuel
said, "Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives."
12 耶西就打發人去叫了他來．他面色光紅、雙目清秀、容貌俊美．耶和華說、這就是他、你起來膏他。
So he sent and had
him brought in. He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features.
Then the LORD said, "Rise and anoint him; he is the one."
